What Does Culture Mean To Me?

Culture to me is very significant. Coming from a place where culture is embraced and being an international student, has allowed me to explore my passion for culture. I haven't traveled the world much, but I hope that someday I will able to do so, which will let me to explore into cultural studies in depth. Culture, allows me to learn about my personal self. I get to understand how and why certain people do things the way they do them and the story behind it. Being able to embrace another person's culture is pretty fascinating!

Originally I was born in Niger, moved to Tanzania when I was four and after 15 years came to Dubai to start university. Growing up in a different country that I was born in, allowed me to explore various cultures, people, and events.  I met with individuals who changed my perspective of seeing and doing things. By being around people, who have different beliefs, eat differently or even see the world in a different view has allowed me to become culturally involved.

Living in Tanzania - where I spoke the language, ate their national food listened to their music was an engaging experience for me. I can proudly say that it has opened by eyes to not just sharing my thoughts and culture but also others. Coming to Dubai, at first was nerve wrecking I didn’t want to leave the shared culture I had with Tanzania; it felt like home to me. But I grew fond of this place. I felt like I was restarting a new chapter in my life, met new people, and some of who had an entirely different culture to mine. I interacted with many and made friends; it has been great so far. Three years and still here, Dubai is a great social environment! Many have asked why did you choose ‘Culture & Diversity ‘ as a project, and the reason is simple- I am fond of learning about other people, not just culture but the identity as well as their representations in society. There are a million blogs and articles about different cultures and identity. However, I can happily say that mine is different because it offers a variety of culture and the little distinctive things one might not notice while living in this beautiful city of people. I have decided to interview some people, as a platform to share their thoughts and not just mine.
